Please note, the symbols in the symbol sets provided through the Commtap Symboliser are not filtered. This means, if you symbolise an explicit word - such as a word related to sex education or drug misuse, then you should expect that an explicit symbol could come up.


Languages often also contain words which usually don't have an explicit meaning, but do have an explicit meaning in certain contexts. If the usual meaning of a word is not explicit, then, you should not be offered an explicit symbol as one of the alternatives. If you need an explicit symbol to come up as one of the options when you symbolise one of these words, then use the "Alternative Word" feature.


Please do let us know if an unexpected symbol comes up when you symbolise a word - telling us the word you typed, the name of the symbol set, and the symbol that came up. Please also include the alternative text for the symbol: right click on it, choose "View Alt Text...", copy and paste all of the Alt Text into the message you send us.


Why we haven't filtered "explicit" symbols

We have taken the precautions outlined above for "explicit" symbols, but we haven't filtered them out.


We've done this, because while there are a number of language concepts - and therefore images associated with these concepts - that people would generally accept as explicit - and possibly offensive, there are also a number of other language concepts and images associated with them that some people will find inappropriate and others won't. So, it's not possible for us to apply a rule for which symbols to include and which symbols not to include which would suit everyone. It is therefore up to you, as a user of the software, to decide which symbols are OK to use and which aren't for your particular situation and for those you will be sharing your documents with.
